Base Staff Development

In 2022, Base partnered with Halo Training to undertake a two day Base Leadership Development Programme up at Coronet Peak, the focus was on building trust-based relationships in a practical team setting. We learnt a lot about ourselves and how we work as a team.

The team trekked up Coronet Peak and were then taken (by helicopter) to a secluded alpine lake for some cold-water immersion. This was a memorable experience for all involved.

The Base Leadership Team attend monthly workshops with Halo Training.

Training and Competence

Training and competence of our people is of the utmost importance.  With ever changing regulations in the civil contracting sector we want our staff to be compliant and confident for all the jobs they undertake.  We undertake internal competency assessments for all our operators and have a certified internal trainer and assessor. External training is encouraged and promoted recent training has included:

  • Lifting , slinging and placement course

  • St John’s First Aid course

  • Site Safe civil and advanced passports

  • Numerous staff are trained in Basic Traffic control and selected staff have STMS

  • Monthly training sessions are held for all interested staff on an array of topics including:

    • Log book compliance

    • Trench Compaction

    • Manual handling

Quality

We believe if we are conducting work safety by competent and trained people the quality of the work will follow, though we do undertake testing regimes to ensure the quality of each and every project we undertake.  Testing regimes include compaction testing with clegg hammer, daily trench inspections and a variety of reticulated service testing including chlorination and hydrostatic testing.

Looking After the Environment

Working in such a pristine environment we are committed as a company to ensuring the protection of the environment whilst undertaking our work. We respect the unique and varied flora and fauna of the Central Otago region and work closely with all stakeholders to ensure our impact is minimal.

Environmental hazards are monitored and controlled and plant and machinery are purchased with environmental impact in mind. As civil contractors we seek to enhance the surrounding environment for future generations not harm it.

Safety and wellbeing of our staff is paramount to our business. We have clear policies and procedures that all the company follows to ensure the safety of all and the quality of the work being undertaken.

We have a dedicated Health and Safety Supervisor who oversees the aspects of the business but we believe that health and safety is a collective responsibility. Health and Safety is at the forefront of any meeting, agenda and is discussed open and honestly throughout all layers of the business.

We believe no one comes to work to get hurt or injured and we strive for zero harm across all aspects of the workforce.

We have a health and safety committee who meet quarterly and contribute issues arising from the workforce.

Health of all our staff is as important to us as the safety of staff. We encourage healthy lifestyle choices and promote different wellness topics throughout the year.  Health risks are assessed monitored and controlled throughout the workplace.

Together we work collectively towards promoting and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace for all.
