Remarkables Ski Field Development
Client: NZSki Client Ref: Q1143
Contract Description

Skifield development of the Curvey Basin chairlift and trail, earthworks for the new base building & learners slope area. Extensive earthworks for three new carparks and new access road alignment. Intensive and detail tussock re-vegetation to all earthwork areas, working closely with DOC & NZSki staff. With approximately 150,000 m3 of earthworks at Alpine altitude this was a serious project.
In the summer of 2013-14 NZSki undertook the development and installation of the Curvey Basin trail and new 6 seater detachable chair, along with extensive learners slope, carparking, earthwork and access road re-alignment. The site development, chairlift & infrastructure projects were in conjunction with the $24,000,000 new base building development a year later.

The Curvey trail with 90,000 m3 of rock cut to fill and 6.4 hectares of alpine re-vegetation was resource demanding with D9 bulldozers, a 60 tonne excavator and numerous dump trucks required. The learners slope, carpark and roading with a further 53,000 m3 of cut to fill and 5 hectares of tussock re-vegetation, 8,000 m3 of roading gravel and 560 m3 of gabions required further resourcing.

All works were to be completed in a 7 month summer window period of October to May. All works, and in particular the native alpine re-vegetation were finished to meet DOC’s alpine reserve standard and resource consent requirements.

This was Base’s largest and most demanding alpine earthworks & civil project. All works were completed in spite of an early winter arrival.
